This deeply flavored Caramelized Onion, Fig, and Port Wine Dip brings together golden caramelized onions, rich balsamic vinegar, dried figs, and a splash of port wine for a luxurious spread. Finished with cream cheese and sour cream, this dip is perfect for charcuterie boards, crostini, or even as a gourmet burger topping.
Ingredients (Makes about 1 1/2 cups)
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter or olive oil
- 1/3 cup dried figs, chopped
- 1/4 cup port wine or red wine
- 1 tablespoon aged balsamic vinegar
- 1 teaspoon maple syrup or date syrup
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup mascarpone (optional, for extra richness)
- Salt and cracked black pepper to taste
- Optional garnish: microgreens, crushed walnuts, or fig slivers
Instructions
1. Caramelize the Onions
In a skillet over low heat, melt butter and add onions. Cook slowly for 30–40 minutes, stirring often, until deep golden brown.
2. Deglaze and Infuse
Add chopped figs, port wine, and balsamic vinegar. Stir well and simmer until the wine is mostly reduced and figs are softened, about 5–7 minutes. Add maple syrup and mix.
3. Blend the Dip Base
In a mixing bowl, beat together cream cheese, sour cream, and mascarpone until smooth and fluffy.
4. Combine and Chill
Fold in the caramelized onion mixture. Season with salt and black pepper. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour to let flavors develop.
