Classic Barbeque Sauce Recipe

Barbecue sauce is a versatile condiment that can be used as a marinade, basting sauce, or dipping sauce for grilled or smoked meats. There are many variations of barbecue sauce, but most include a combination of sweet, sour, and savory flavors. Common ingredients in barbecue sauce include tomatoes, vinegar, sugar, spices, and sometimes mustard or molasses. Barbecue sauce can be thick or thin, spicy or mild, depending on the recipe and regional preferences. Here’s how you make it!

  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce (such as Lea & Perrins)
  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice (from canned pineapple chunks or fresh)
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped pineapple chunks (optional, for texture)
  1. In a medium saucepan, combine all the ingredients over medium heat.
  2. Stir well to combine.
  3. Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
  4. Simmer the sauce for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens to your desired consistency.
  5. Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if needed.
  6. If you prefer a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender or regular blender to blend the sauce until smooth.
  7. Remove the sauce from heat and let it cool before using.
  8. Use the sauce immediately or store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  1. Spicy BBQ Sauce: Add extra cayenne pepper or a few dashes of hot sauce to your BBQ sauce recipe for a spicy kick.
  2. Honey BBQ Sauce: Increase the amount of honey in the recipe for a sweeter, honey-flavored BBQ sauce.
  3. Mustard BBQ Sauce: Add yellow mustard to the base recipe for a tangy, mustard-flavored BBQ sauce.
  4. Maple BBQ Sauce: Substitute some or all of the sugar with maple syrup for a sweet and smoky flavor.
  5. Chipotle BBQ Sauce: Add chipotle peppers in adobo sauce to the base recipe for a smoky and spicy BBQ sauce.
  6. Whiskey BBQ Sauce: Add a splash of whiskey to the base recipe for a rich, complex flavor.
  7. Asian BBQ Sauce: Add soy sauce, ginger, garlic, and a splash of rice vinegar to the base recipe for an Asian-inspired BBQ sauce.
  8. Fruit-Infused BBQ Sauce: Add pureed fruits like peach, pineapple, or mango to the base recipe for a fruity twist.
  9. Coffee BBQ Sauce: Add brewed coffee or espresso to the base recipe for a deep, rich flavor.
  10. Bourbon BBQ Sauce: Similar to whiskey BBQ sauce, but with bourbon for a slightly sweeter and smoother flavor.
